This is a collection of various types of poems - lyrics, short narratives, left-handed didactics. Only the form (which is merely rhythm, meter, rhyme) is old fashioned. The language and content are contemporary. The book fulfills its title. This is a disordered assortment.

Takin' a Trip Down Poetry LaneJoseph Hart's poetry book Motley Chaos explores several avenues, and does with such precision
the reader scarcely realizes the ride is covering so much at once. But we don't need a pathfinder to feel our way through this artist's works.
From the idea of dying on our own terms to living on our own terms Hart says:
When I die the sea will rage
And swells will thrash the rocks!
Stars will fall! The moon go in eclipse!
Volcanoes will erupt and spray their ash
And liquid red into the firmament!
All to tell the deity I died.
I think he wouldn't notice otherwise.
We want to make an impression in death as well as in life!
The poet also explores political bigotry as well as poetical bigotry:
Conservatives are selfish bigots.
All they ever wanted
Was to shape the world like god
In their own reflection.
Liberals are all deluded.
Though they're well-intentioned,
Those whom they would help would sooner
Cut their kindly throats.
From close minded politicians to haughty poetry magazines that smell with the scent of their own self-grandiose illusions, Hart expresses the life and death of poetry so well:
Poetry's become a joke - and everybody knows it -
Don't they give a damn, or are they crazy?
When Bukowski is an icon,
Merwin Poet Laureate,
And little magazines require
Excellence in craft -
Sounds fetching on the surface - only
Look at what they publish -
And Wilbur is called beautiful
For want of something better -
It's clear enough that poetry
Is dead without a grave -
A nice analogy is drawn here to life as well as to an opinion of poetry. Beautiful people catch our attention for a time, but gradually lose appeal and soon blend in with the rest of the scenery.
A pretty face at home is like
A picture on the wall.
After several weeks you cease
To notice that it's there.
And poets can be quite similar. Joseph makes several references in this book to the old poets, especially Keats...whereas Keats is pretty to look at, language, rhyme and rhythm-wise, Hart seems to find him a bit forced. When things are forced on us, we eventually grow tired of them...In contrast he speaks of Phillip Larkin as rough, uncomfortable at times, but very real. The "real" lasts, both inside and outside, when speaking of people and their make-up. This is also true of poets. There are those who write beautiful words which somehow feel contrived to make an impression, rather than getting to the guts of the impression life has made on the poets themselves.
Do we write to sell? and/or Sell ourselves to write? Or are we sincere poets just telling it like it is, hoping that maybe someone will share our words and relate.
I feel that in this book, Joseph Hart makes us take a good look inside ourselves as both poets and human beings in general. Have you the guts to take a peek into yourself? Then this is a read for you.

Motley Chaos Joseph Hart 9781481098410 Books Reviews
This is my favorite of Joseph Harts collections. At least my favorite for now. I can't wait see what else Joseph Hart will capture me with.
I have enjoyed several books by Joseph Hart,
I have been caught by surprise many times on his view
and intake of his life, surroundings and wild imagination and every time
I find my self wondering what is really going on in his creative mind,
I look forward to Joseph's next creation.

Review
Keats and the Sea and Motley Chaos Poetry A desultory collection of iconoclastic cacophony by Joseph Hart; published by Valentine Press.
While poetry, as it is written now-a-days, is for a select audience, I found Hart's poetry even more select, may I dare say, even more esoteric. With that, I give each of his poetry books a rating of 2.5 out of 5.
Hart's use of blank and rhymed verses within his two books are formal and are usually well-structured. The reader witnesses his passion in some of his poems, with strong images of the sea and water. But too many of the poems reference poets, philosophers, mythologies, and artists that (I believe) readers won't recognize, and there is not enough information within the context of the poems to make logical guesses.
Yet, for those people whose interest and knowledge lie with the writings of Keats, William, Aiken, Houseman and others, and who know of Chopin, or chiaroscuro technique, these poems would be engaging and delightful.
It is obvious that Hart loves what he's writing and that he is well-read. He is just writing for a very specific audience which is why I gave him 2.5 out of 5.
American Authors Book Vending Review.
It is a gifted poet who can write so prolifically about death without seeming morbid. In Joseph Hart's "Motley Chaos", you will find such an ability. I am reminded of Dylan Thomas' "Do Not Go Gently Into That Good Night" with Hart's old man raging against death in "The Preacher" and with his own "My Death". And his poem entitled "Sleep" calls to mind Bob Dylan's words that "sleep is like a temporary death". In this splendid collection of poetry, Joseph Hart offers musing on Sartre, Camus, Dickinson, Keats, Larkin, Bukowski, Millay, Aiken and Poe. He, at once, rants about them and reveres them in his own unique style (and sometimes, it's not easy to tell the difference!). In "The Farce", he bemoans the fact that these commonly esteemed poets are actually killing poetry. And yet, in "Without Poetry", he gets to the heart of what the craft means to him with astounding imagery. In "Signs", he attacks the religious fanatics, racists and bigots among us, and in "The Oak", his words are so beautiful in their simplicity. Mr. Hart is truly a master of the poetic form, whether he's celebrating, criticizing, rejoicing or ranting. Often, he does them all simultaneously with expert precision.
